Typography Tricks Part 2

Kerning and Tracking

In typography, kerning is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font, usually to achieve a visually pleasing result. Kerning adjusts the space between individual letter forms, while tracking adjusts spacing uniformly over a range of characters.

Combining both will lift your typography standard.

Type Reading Pattern

We read by taking snapshots of the entire words. Lowercase letters has ascenders and descenders which gives much more recognizable shapes to the words, than the rectangle shape of Uppercase letters.

For example

WE READ BY TAKING SNAPSHOTS OF WORDS

Many people use text jn all caps to emphasize their message. However, what they're actually doing is de-emphasizing their message because text in all caps reduces the shape contrast for each word. All caps are fine in contexts that don't involve much reading, such as logos, headings

Optical Kerning

Optical kerning omits the kerning values set by the type designer and use default values of the software. Good / Bad Depends on the typeface,Sometimes if the kerning values which are included in the typeface are inconsistent.

Matric Kerning

Metric kerning use the kerning values set by the type designer for individual characters. Good / Bad It seems 0k for premium fonts.
